It could be curtains for Amad Diallo’s pre-season as the 21-year-old was filmed limping out of the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on crutches after ‘s 2-0 triumph over on Saturday. Diallo was substituted just 13 minutes after coming as he suffered an injury either to his ankle or achilles.

And it appears to be quite a nasty one with the Ivory Coast international unable to put any weight on his left foot, which was heavily bandaged as he made his way to the team bus. Diallo was brought on by Ten Hag at halftime but went down under no contact in the 55th minute clutching his left ankle.

Facundo Pellistri was brought on to replace him four minutes later as the Red Devils saw out the most impressive performance of their pre-season campaign so far. Fernandes opened up the scoring at the half-hour mark with a strike from outside of the box before Jadon Sancho quickly doubled the Red Devils’ lead seven minutes later as he pounced on a mistake from Gabriel Megahales.

United and Arsenal then squared off in a post-match penalty shoot-out which was won 5-3 by Erik ten Hag’s men after Fabio Vieria skied his penalty over the bar. Meanwhile, Casemiro, Martin Odegaard, Diogo Dalot, Leandro Trossard, Marcus Rashford, Jorginho and Christian Eriksen all found the target.

United are now set to play Wrexham on Wednesday in their next pre-season friendly but are unlikely to be able to call upon the services of Diallo. His injury will be a big knock for Ten Hag, who is said to have been impressed by the young winger’s excellent loan spell at Sunderland last season.

Diallo scored 13 goals and assisted three in 37 Championship games for the Black Cats and was named the club’s Young Player of the Year. Ten Hag was expected to factor him into his first-team plans ahead of the upcoming campaign but will have to wait to hear about the extent of Diallo’s injury first.

Diallo has had a clean bill of health for the most part during his career and hasn’t suffered a serious injury since August 2021 when he missed eight games due to a thigh problem. The Red Devils signed Diallo in 2021 from Atalanta for £21.5million plus £13m worth of add-ons.

He has made nine first-team appearances for United so far, scoring one goal during a Europa League tie with AC Milan in March 2021.
